Club Competition 2004 This year 13 adults and 10 juniors took part in 9 tournaments on the day. This year the hall was booked for longer and play went on from 9am till nearly 3pm, allowing the Restricted Singles and Pot Luck Doubles to be played. In total 87 matches were played. The number of adult entrants have dropped from 23 last year, so any suggestions on how we can make the tournament more appealing/accessible would be welcome. There were a number of excellent displays of table tennis, both single and doubles. In particular the doubles semi-final match between Peter Fordham/Domic Melero and Nigel Jepson/Janet Scoulding received a loud round of applause. Peter and Dominic won 2-1, loosing the first game 5-11 and coming back to win the second 11-5 and the third 11-9. The combination of Peter's defensive style and Dominic's loop attack made for very spectacular table tennis. Quietly dominating the day was Ed Spencer, who won four of the nine tournaments, the Restricted Singles, Handicap Singles, Junior Singles and Doubles.
Congratulations also to Dominic Melero, who won the Men's Singles for the first time this year. The full results are listed below along with the winners for the last few years. Bury Free Press Shield 2002/03 (League Handicap Competition) The division one team from Lawshall won the Shield this year beating Thurston A in the final.
The only Bury club team to reach the semi-finals were Culford Conquerors, who lost to Thurston A. Results from the Top Table competition held on the 20/1/2002 The Club along with the league staged this event which saw some of the best table tennis seen in the area for some while. It was held in the Sports Hall at Culford School, which is a superb new venue for table tennis and all the top players in the league were present. The tournament was run using the new rules up to eleven points and this produced some very close fought games with lots of pressure points. The first rounds were played in groups and in Group 1 there were some very close games with Kevin Gray from the Felsham club having good victories over Andy Dosher from British Sugar, Brian Richardson from Gazeley and Colin Baxter from Thurston, Kevin and Andy moved into the next round. Stowmarket's Lee Balaam was impressive when he won all his games in Group 2 particularly with his 5 leg victories over Bury's David Unwin and the favourite Martin Gray from Felsham. The other two in this group Sugar's Dom Melero and Stowmarket's Phil Watts had some fine games but in the end Lee and Martin progressed to the next round. Group 3 saw Ian Brown from Stowmarket win all his games against Bury's Mick Palmer, Phil Sinclair from British Sugar and late substitute Peter Fordham also from Sugar. Mick took the second spot in this group. The first semi final group threw up some interesting combinations with Martin Gray showing his superiority by beating both his brother Kevin and Ian Brown. The other group had much closer matches with firstly Palmer beating Balaam and then Balaam beating Dosher and then just to confuse matters Dosher beat Palmer. However on countback Dosher went into the final. Lee Ballam was so unlucky having beaten both of the finalists in the earlier rounds. The final was a classic with Dosher winning the first leg 11-7 then Gray came back to win the next two legs by 11 points to 6. However Dosher was not finished and levelled the match by winning the fourth leg 11-7. In the final leg Gray got a good start and after some fantastic rallies kept his lead to finally win by 11 points to 6. Meanwhile in the Consolation final Richardson's attacking shots were too strong for Baxter's more defensive game and he came away the winner 11-8. 11-6, and 11-8. |
